What is an Individual Learning Plan?

An Individual Learning Plan is a personalised approach created for your child by their teachers and educators, in partnership with you.

Each plan reflects your child’s:

  • interests and learning dispositions
  • strengths and learning style
  • current development and next learning steps

Individual Learning Plans include clear goals that support your child’s learning and development acrosskey areas of the Early Years Learning Framework, including identity, connection, wellbeing, confidence as a learner, and communication.

Why Individual Learning Plans matter

Every child learns differently. Individual Learning Plans allow educators to tailor learning experiences to suit each child’s needs, interests, and stage of development.

This personalised approach aims to support each child to feel:

  • seen and understood
  • supported and confident
  • encouraged to explore and try new things
  • celebrated for who they are

For families, Individual Learning Plans provide clarity about how learning is planned, supported, and reviewed over time.

How Individual Learning Plans support learning

Individual Learning Plans guide educators in planning meaningful learning experiences each day.

Educators observe children closely, , and use this understanding to:

  • set meaningful and achievable learning goals
  • plan intentional teaching experiences
  • extend learning based on your child’s interests
  • support social, emotional, language and cognitive development, aligned with early learning outcomes

Each plan is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect your child’s progress and changing interests.

A learning plan that moves with your child

Your child’s Individual Learning Plan moves with them as they transition between rooms, supporting continuity in their learning.

Educators build on your child’s existing knowledge, experiences and ways of learning (their “funds of knowledge”), helping them feel secure, confident and connected as they move through different stages.

Working together with families

Children achieve the best outcomes when families and educators work in partnership. Families are encouraged to share insights, observations and goals, helping to ensure ILPs remain relevant and meaningful.

Families are invited to speak with their child’s teacher or educator to discuss learning goals and ways to support learning at home.
